European immigration crafted this historic St. Louis neighborhood

Tucked along the Mississippi River just south of St Louis, Soulard traces its roots to the 1800s, when Antoine and Julia Soulard established the estate that shaped the neighborhood’s early identity. Their French heritage still echoes through the architecture, traditions, and strong sense of community found here today.

Soulard is home to one of the nation’s largest Mardi Gras celebrations, second only to New Orleans. Its brewing legacy runs deep as well, with Anheuser Busch headquartered nearby. At the center of it all is Soulard Farmers Market, the oldest farmers market west of the Mississippi, serving as the neighborhood’s vibrant gathering place.

Second-Empire, French-influenced homes give a sense of identity

Soulard’s French roots are reflected in its signature red brick homes, many built in the Second Empire style that dates back to the 1800s. Ornate details and mansard roofs define much of the south side of the neighborhood, where historic residences stand alongside Anheuser Busch and long established churches.

Home prices generally range from about 250000 for properties ready for renovation to around 700000 for newly built homes. Buyers should expect character and charm, along with the occasional need for updates that come with owning a historic property.

Famous marketplace, vintage restaurants, bar traditions keep history alive

In the 1840s, Julia Soulard donated land that became what is now Soulard Farmers Market, one of the oldest public markets west of the Mississippi. Today it remains a neighborhood anchor, offering local produce, meats, spices, handmade goods, and Cajun favorites like Soulard’s Cajun Corner. For a quieter local option, Vincent's 12th Street Market provides another way to shop close to home.

Soulard’s dining and nightlife scene keeps its history alive. John D McGurk's Irish Pub and Garden is known for hearty Irish fare and a lively atmosphere. The neighborhood is also famous for its bar traditions, including pedal powered bar cycles that turn a night out into a moving celebration through the historic streets of St Louis.
