A City That Showcases Architectural Talent

Named after nearby Washington University, University City, often called U City, has long been recognized for its architectural character. Much of the community was developed during and after the St Louis World Fair, a defining moment that helped establish its identity. Builders and craftsmen used the opportunity to showcase their work, turning U City into a living display of design and detail. Along with Clayton and the Central West End, it remains one of the most historically significant areas in the region.

The architectural beauty extends beyond its residential streets. University City Hall, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, stands prominently on Delmar Boulevard with its distinctive octagonal, five story design. From grand historic homes to notable civic landmarks, U City continues to reflect the pride and craftsmanship that shaped its beginnings.

Brick, Craftsmanship, and Old World Detail

Brick defines University City, with most homes dating back to the early 1900s and built to reflect timeless character. Many were crafted with imported materials chosen specifically for each home, including stained glass from Waterford, Ireland and centuries old doors from Sicily. As Beth Schultz says, you do not just own these homes, you become the steward of a piece of art.

The median price is around 315000. Larger Tudor and Colonial homes south of Delmar can exceed 1.2 million, while smaller ranches and bungalows north of Delmar are often closer to 200000, all set along tree lined streets that preserve the neighborhood’s classic charm.

Just minutes away is Forest Park, a 1300 acre destination that is home to the Saint Louis Zoo and the Saint Louis Art Museum, both offering free admission. Outdoor space, recreation, and culture are all within easy reach.
